Canuck Librarian

I'm a reference librarian at an academic institution and I am interested in all areas that help improve the user experience including information literacy, digital services and much more. I used to be a cataloguer and I still believe Dewey is more fun than LCC.

CBC News: City of Yellowknife cancels Heterosexual Day

CBC News: City of Yellowknife cancels Heterosexual Day

I hate it when people who cause a disturbance say "I didn't know it'd get so much attention". He says he did it for reasons of equality. Uh-huh, sure. Now let's declare a "White History Month" to equal out having a Black History Month, since that promotes inequality. Yeah, that logic works.
The fact is homosexuals are still not considered equals by many people and having a Gay Pride day helps bring awareness that in our home of the True North Strong and Free, not everyone is looked upon equally (and I'm not just talking gays here).

I didn't get to catalogue this one, but I saw it on the cart and, with a title like that, just had to look at it!

"Modifiers are the spice of life."

who says grammar can't be outrageously fun?

Do new library ads just borrow trouble?

Do new library ads just borrow trouble?

I like the concept, the thing is, people never do tend to read the "fine" print - even when it's not that fine. Maybe it would've been better as a sesame street type "one of these things is not like the other" with the pictures of Mao, Hoover and the library.

I've heard before that any publicity is good publicity, so I suppose the MPL is happy!

Winnipeg Sun: NEWS - Potter book just too big

Winnipeg Sun: NEWS - Potter book just too big

That's sad that a Canadian company is losing business. But hey, what can you do? I wonder, if it's a different printer do they still use old forest friendly paper like the other Raincoast books? I'll be upset if they don't.

Anyway, I can't wait to get my copy!

CBC News: Girl buys bulletproof vests for RCMP dogs

CBC News: Girl buys bulletproof vests for RCMP dogs

Such a heartwarming story...kind of. It's sad that we have to put our dear friends in danger, especially considering they have no voice or decision in the matter (although, I eat other animals and they don't have a say about that either!). Nevertheless, it's good to see they now have protective vests. Some children are just ambitious.

interviews

My supervisor has been interviewing for a position the last couple of days. It's interesting seeing ppl come in for interviews, remembering sitting at a stranger's desk to do the test, wondering if anyone else noticed I was there or cared.

I think the last person who came in was a former classmate. I didn't catch her eye so I don't know if she saw me, or if she would recognize me as we were not friends and didn't hang in the same circle. I do think she was in my classification class though. I think it'd be nice if she was hired - she looked to be a bit younger than the others and I wouldn't mind finding a new friend.

Harry Potter Alert: Weekend Sweepstakes

I'm a little old for this, but thought I'd put this out there!

May 13, 2005

Raincoast Books and Bloomsbury PLC announced today that J. K. Rowling will be launching her long-awaited new book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in Scotland's Edinburgh Castle on July 16th and that a select group of lucky young Canadians will be on hand to participate in the historic event.

Go to http://www.raincoast.com/harrypotter for contest details.

"Her [Rowling's] audience of seventy aspiring cub reporters (aged 8-16) will attend the Harry Potter Children’s Press Conference Weekend on behalf of newspapers, and other organizations from around the world. The cub reporters will meet J. K. Rowling who will give them each a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. There will be a photographer at the midnight event who will take a photograph of each child with J. K. Rowling as she gives them their book. These pictures will be available to all newspapers(national and international) via satellite that night. The cub reporters will then have the weekend to read the book in a specially created Reading Room at Edinburgh Castle before attending the Children’s Press Conference
on Sunda 17th July to question J. K. Rowling about the new book.

Young Canadians (aged 8-16) will have ample opportunity to enter to win one of the coveted spots in Scotland in the weeks to come.

Raincoast Books will be launching an online contest June 1st in partnership with independent bookstores and other retailers across Canada to select a Canadian cub reporter who, along with a guardian or parent, will travel to Edinburgh for the ultimate Harry Potter fan’s dream holiday. CBC News: Conservative Stronach joins Liberals

CBC News: Conservative Stronach joins Liberals
"The millionaire businesswoman becomes minister of human resources and skills development, the prime minister said Tuesday morning."

Well, I always thought that, other than the big business factor, she didn't really fit with the Conservatives. Harper says she's doing this because of her ambition to be leader of a party. well good on her. Damn it, it's about time a woman followed her ambitions in politics. Sure one can argue that ambition killed Caesar and a whole slew of others, but women need as many strong political players as we can get!

I don't care if Belinda may be from a wealthy family. I don't care that she hasn't been in politics long (do we really have to be to know what it's all about?!). The only thing I don't like is the excuse of the conservatives alliance with the Bloc. I mean, I don't think that alliance means anything. The Bloc will always be Separatist - fact is fact. I don't think another party temporarily allying with them really advances the separatist movement.

anyway, I should be working, but I was listening to CBC radio and thought I'd write something before I forgot. And what's with the talk about her relationship being over just because of a party change? stupid.

ABC News: St. Louis Library Clerk Leaves $350,000

I'd like to leave something when I die, but unfortunately I am not frugal whatsoever and still have tens of thousands of dollars in debt to pay off.

I think most libraries hope for this one day.

Wacky and weird subject headings

My supervisor notified us of some newer headings, then she sent us this URL to have more fun:

Wacky and weird subject headings: "Cataloguing... just try dropping that word in a conversation and watch people's eyes glaze over with boredom, or even worse, complete and utter indifference. But just because John Q. Public may not appreciate the beauty of Library of Congress Subject Headings doesn't mean we should fret too much. After all, if no one is watching the librarians we can do whatever we want. "

see, my job can be fun!

Gérard Moncomble, écrivain

Gérard Moncomble, écrivain

I've catalogued several books by this author in the last couple of weeks and I enjoyed looking at them all. The stories are cute and/or educational and the artists' illustrations are fantastic.
Today I catalogued Inukshuk, le garçon de pierre. Thought it was interesting since the Vancouver 2010 Olympic committee just chose an Inukshuk as their logo. The story was interesting, telling one of the many possible histories of why and how Inulshuks were created.

Anyway, back to work.
