New York Daily News - Boroughs - Clem Richardson: Librarian defines activism
I don't think the average Joe would equate librarianship with activism, but I know the more I learn, the more activism seems to play a role not just in librarianship but in my life.
When I was a youngster I was really active in teh environment club at school. I did everything from turn the compost in the courtyard, planting trees, picking garbage from local streams and even attending an enviro kids camp.
Unfortunately when I went off to uni I lost this bit of activism as I was scared off by the radicals. Sure, I'm still a little wary of all the radicals out there, but it's time for me to start caring about what's going on!
Last February, I participated in a small event for
Banned Books Week. Organized by some local booksellers it was just a little gathering in an upstairs room with an assortment of books and beer. I was quite glad to see that the two women that came in after me were librarians from my co-op placement! Too bad more librarians didn't show up!
