Canuck Librarian

I'm a reference librarian at an academic institution and I am interested in all areas that help improve the user experience including information literacy, digital services and much more. I used to be a cataloguer and I still believe Dewey is more fun than LCC.

Mystery Meat Navigation

Mystery Meat Navigation

My web design prof just emailed the class giving us the URL to the class site. Looking at his bibliography for the course, I found Web Pages That Suck. The Mystery Meat Navigation discussion above is very interesting. I have always found that technique to be annoying and bothersome since you can't always see where you are going, or can't see all the options at once, but as mentioned here it does look nice.
Well, I'm glad I learned something, and school hasn't even started yet!

Digital Reference: Online training for chat reference librarians

Digital Reference: Online training for chat reference librarians

I found this blog post to be really interesting. This is exactly the type of info I want and I'm sure it will come in handy when cover Virtual Reference in my Advanced Information Services course this semester.

Clem Richardson: Librarian defines activism

New York Daily News - Boroughs - Clem Richardson: Librarian defines activism

I don't think the average Joe would equate librarianship with activism, but I know the more I learn, the more activism seems to play a role not just in librarianship but in my life.

When I was a youngster I was really active in teh environment club at school. I did everything from turn the compost in the courtyard, planting trees, picking garbage from local streams and even attending an enviro kids camp.

Unfortunately when I went off to uni I lost this bit of activism as I was scared off by the radicals. Sure, I'm still a little wary of all the radicals out there, but it's time for me to start caring about what's going on!

Last February, I participated in a small event for Banned Books Week. Organized by some local booksellers it was just a little gathering in an upstairs room with an assortment of books and beer. I was quite glad to see that the two women that came in after me were librarians from my co-op placement! Too bad more librarians didn't show up!

Drive Thru Library

Ottawa - canada.com network

I think a Drive Thru is a pretty good idea. I believe the central library back in my hometown had a drop-off right by the driveway which did help speed things up. Having more services, such as picking up holds, could be really beneficial as well. As to the diasagreement, as of now I'd say neither a volunteer nor a librarian should work the window; let a library assistant or clerk do it.

A Big Fat Stupid Man by Jamie Glazov

FrontPage magazine.com :: A Big Fat Stupid Man by Jamie Glazov

I admit: I know very little about Moore; have not read his books (yet) or seen Roder and Me. Nope. I have seen Bowling for Columbine and have read various articles in newpapers, magaxines and e-zines....

So, two guys have decided to write a book about Moore...to "debunk" all his propaganda.

I do believe I'm the type of person Moore's message is aimed at, so maybe I'm biased. I've always been to the left of things anyway. But really, these two guys sound like they don't get it. Which they don't and probably can't - it's beyond their understanding...

the only thing I can agree with in this article is their statement that "Moore is a brilliant propagandist"

Why do I agree - because I think Moore is presenting an extremem viewpoint - I do believe that is necessary though since we haven't been getting that viewpoint from anywhere else.

UK - Author 'chilled' to learn Harry's half-blood status has Nazi parallels

Scotsman.com News - UK - Author 'chilled' to learn Harry's half-blood status has Nazi parallels

I find it odd that Rowling had never thought of this relation beforehand. I know the first time I read it, that's exactly what I thought of...as well as other times when "pure-blood" is deemed superior, such as in royalty or even inter-racial marriages. I guess, some actions and thoughts are truly subconscious.

It's always good to know librarians are still needed! So here is just another case of Google not solving every student's needs!
